Stephen has been Executive Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre Scarborough since 1996, helping to oversee the final stages of the conversion of the Grade II listed ODEON cinema which is now the home of the company with it’s two auditoria.
Prior to coming to Scarborough he had been Head of the Press Office at The National Theatre from 1988 under Richard Eyre and prior to that a member of the team and deputy under Peter Hall.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1969/70 before working at all levels of stage management in various reps. around the country from 1970-73. He switched to publicity in 1973 at The Library Theatre, Manchester followed by six years in Scarborough before joining The National Theatre.
He is an active member of the Scarborough Renaissance Town Team which, with Yorkshire Forward’s help, is working towards changing the profile of the “first seaside town”.
