Employment Relations Update December 2011

1 December 2011

EQUITY

Commercial Theatre Agreement – claim  now received from Equity

As previously reported, the Commercial Theatre claim has been received for a three year agreement to start in April 2012 which asks for parity between rehearsal and performance salaries (rehearsal salaries are currently £347 per week and performance salaries are £400 per week) amongst many other financial demands.  There is still time to submit comments on Equity’s claim for the negotiating committee to consider. It can be downloaded from
http://www.tmauk.org/members/industrial/agreements/commercial.aspx

Overseas Touring Agreement

As previously reported, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office rates will remain frozen while negotiations with Equity continue.

BECTU

Claim now received from BECTU

BECTU has submitted a claim for the 2012 – 2013 year for an RPI increase (currently running at 5.4%) “with no strings attached”  ie: they do not wish to entertain the thought of any counter-claims. There are no other claims.

MUSICIANS’ UNION – claim expected soon

As mentioned previously, a claim for the next two year agreement starting in  April 2012 will be received shortly.  Please do give some thought to whether there are any changes that you think the Agreement could benefit from.

OTHER MATTERS

No Pay / Low Pay campaign

A reminder about a campaign currently being run by all unions in relation to unpaid workers eg: interns; ‘volunteers’ and their view that everybody should be paid at least the national minimum wage.  This view is also gaining political favour.  It is extremely difficult to give general advice on this subject as each circumstance needs to be looked at in isolation – and there are some genuine and exceptional circumstances where people do not need to be paid eg: Supernumeraries under the definition in the TMA / Equity Subsidised Repertory Agreement.

Please take a moment to review your operations and do get in touch with the TMA’s Legal Team if you have any queries on the matter.

Pensions and auto-enrolment

Pensions and auto-enrolment is still being considered in the light of statute. I have prepared a short overview. if you would like to have a copy, please contact me.
