Theatre Awards UK panellists and judging process

Theatre Awards UK are given to honour creative excellence and the outstanding work seen on stages throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Panellists

Over 200 members of the public are appointed every year to assess productions at their local theatres. Panellists have been appointed for the Awards year 2011/2012. We are not currently taking applications for the 2012/2013 season but an announcement about this will be made in the summer of 2012.

Judging process

Nominations for Theatre Awards UK are made by members of the theatregoing public, who are recruited formally as regional panellists and by critics from national and regional newspapers.

The nominations are then short-listed and judged by the Theatre Awards UK panels.   The awards for Oustanding Achievement in Opera and Dance are judged by the Theatre Awards UK panels for Opera and Dance respectively.  All other awards except The Stage Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre are judged by the Theatre Awards UK panel.

The Stage Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre is given at the discretion of the Managing Director and Editor of The Stage newspaper.

The Theatre Awards UK panels include national and regional critics, the President, Past-Presidents and members of the TMA's Council of Management .  The Theatre Awards UK panels are chaired by the President or ex-Presidents of the TMA.

The meetings of the Panels are also attended by the Chief Executive and Awards Manager of the TMA in a non-voting capacity.

Eligibility

These awards are open to TMA members working in both the commercial and subsidised sectors of the performing arts.  To be eligible for the production categories of Theatre Awards UK, a production has to be either produced by a TMA member or seen in a TMA member theatre or venue.   There are a few exceptions which are not eligible:

  • Amateur productions
  • Royal Shakespeare Company productions in London
  • National Theatre productions in London
  • Any production in the West End unless it has originated in a TMA theatre
  • Festival productions

TMA members touring productions are eligible when they are presented at either TMA member or non-TMA member theatres or venues.  However, if a TMA member is presenting a touring production at a non-member theatre or venue, they are advised to contact the Awards office so that regional panellists can be informed of the forthcoming production.
